High Line Park Manhattan

What do you do with a historic elevated freight railway that spans over a mile along the West Side of Manhattan? Well you could turn it into a public park, High Line Park to be exact. Owned by the City of New York and maintained by the Friends of the High Line, this elevated public space complete with benches, artwork, and vegetation, is for all to enjoy.

You can access the High Line from several staircases including Gansevoort Street on the south end in the Meatpacking District and West 30th Street at the north end. There are very specific park rules that prohibit things like dogs, bicycles, skateboards, amplified sound, smoking, large event gatherings, and a few more ‘no-nos’ which are posted.

It’s a great way to explore that side of the city, get a feel for architecture, and enjoy a quiet stroll above the bustling streets of Manhattan. Many people have commented before that they could see something like this working in Vancouver. View the rest of my photos in my New York Flickr set.
